On a Jan. 22, 2026, episode of “The Dan Buettner Podcast,” Hawn articulated the philosophy that has guided her relationship with Kurt: “freedom.”

Hawn explained:

“I have a relationship with birds. I'm a bird. And you leave the cage door open, I may never fly out. But if you close that door, for my freedom and my independence, I would probably take all my feathers off.”

Her statement underscored the belief that autonomy, rather than undermining commitment, actually strengthens it – a perspective she and Kurt have lived by for decades.

She emphasized that the “freedom of self” allows both partners to thrive together. Hawn added:

“It’s a freedom of basically not melding into somebody else, when you’re copacetic on certain areas and you have freedom.”

Addressing the topic of marriage directly, Hawn dismissed the idea that formalizing her and Kurt’s relationship would weaken it. She stated:

“Even if we did get married, it wouldn’t make any difference because it’s 42 years now.”

The longevity of their bond, in her view, speaks louder than any legal status.

When asked why she continues to choose Kurt after all these years, Hawn responded:

“Because I have respect for him because I think he’s an amazing person.”

She also spoke candidly about attraction, noting:

“I’m also very sexually attracted to him. And that’s important. If you have a long-term sexual relationship, that’s actually really healthy. He’s my sexual object.”

Hawn praised Kurt’s intelligence, talent, and enduring appeal, adding:

“I find him incredibly handsome to this day. Kids love him. We’re an unbelievably happy family – most of the time. … There’s a cohesiveness. Why would I want anybody who is perfect? There is no such thing.”
