In his interview with The Sunday Times, published on Nov. 1, 2025, Hopkins revealed that his wife, Arroyave, once suspected he may have autism.
“I’m obsessed with numbers. I’m obsessed with detail. I like everything in order. And memorizing,” he said, adding, “Stella looked it up and she said, ‘You must be Asperger’s.’”
According to the Cleveland Clinic, Asperger’s syndrome was once a standalone diagnosis but is now categorized under autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The National Institute of Mental Health explained that ASD is a developmental condition that influences how individuals interact, communicate, and behave.
Hopkins, however, expressed skepticism about the informal label:
“I didn’t know what the hell she was talking about. I don’t even believe it.”
While some may find comfort in identifying with a diagnosis, Hopkins takes a more existential approach. When journalist Decca Aitkenhead suggested that a late-life diagnosis might offer him clarity, he replied:
“Well, I guess I’m cynical because it’s all nonsense. It’s all rubbish. ADHD, OCD, Asperger’s, blah, blah, blah. Oh God, it’s called living.”
He elaborated further, reflecting on human complexity:
“It’s just being a human being, full of tangled webs and mysteries and stuff that’s in us. Full of warts and grime and craziness – it’s the human condition. All these labels. I mean, who cares? But now it’s fashion.”
Hopkins’ perspective challenges the growing trend of self-diagnosis and mental health labeling, urging people to accept their imperfections as part of the broader human experience rather than as clinical conditions.
