On Saturday, October 25, 2025, police and the Besançon animal shelter (SPA) made a gruesome discovery at the home of a 67-year-old woman in Maussans, Haute-Saône. They found over 100 animals living in unsanitary conditions alongside about twenty decomposing carcasses.

A report from the animal welfare association 30 Million Friends prompted this intervention. More than 100 animals, many of them malnourished and living in unsanitary conditions, as well as about twenty decomposing carcasses of dogs and goats, were discovered this Saturday, October 25, 2025, in a house in Maussans, Haute-Saône, by the gendarmerie and the SPA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) of Besançon.

Among them were " about sixty dogs, including many puppies ," but also "goats, geese, chickens, and cats." According to Sandra Hummel, president of the Canima association, who came to help "empty the house ," animal carcasses were also lying "outside the house." She explained to our colleagues at Le Parisien that the 67-year-old owner was "completely overwhelmed" and "could no longer take care of all these animals." "She couldn't feed them properly anymore ," she added.

The SPA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is launching an emergency appeal
